Smashes—those fruity, icy blends that bring to light the best of the cocktail season—have been popular for a minute. Like over a century. From Mint Julips to Rhubard Smashes, these concoctions are typically served on ice and highlights seasonal fruit and/or herbs. We find Knob Creek or Woodford Reserve equally smashing.

1. First, let’s make the cranberry syrup. In a small saucepan, bring maple syrup and cranberries to a simmer on medium heat or until the berries burst. Strain and cool.

2. In a cocktail shaker, filled with ice, add the maple-cranberry syrup, bourbon, and cranberry juice. Shake well and strain into a glass filled with ice. Garnish with a cranberry or two and rosemary sprig.
